Definition: The process by which a product, service, or technology becomes standardized, widely available, and increasingly price-driven, losing distinctiveness and becoming marketable as a commodity. Recent technology commentary describes rapid commoditization as a recurring feature of technology markets, while adjacent scholarship discusses commodification of digital assets, attention, and user data in platform economies [Seidl 2023].
