Autonomic computing

Autonomic computing             Computational Infrastructure; Software Engineering

noun phrase

Definition: A computing paradigm in which systems manage themselves in accordance with high-level objectives set by administrators or users, with minimal direct human intervention. In the classic formulation by Kephart and Chess, autonomic computing aims to create self-managing computing systems; later IBM materials describe such systems in terms of autonomic managers that monitor, analyse, plan, and execute changes through sensors, effectors, and a knowledge base [Kephart, Chess 2003].

Example in context: Autonomic computing, perhaps the most attractive approach to solving this problem, creates systems that can manage themselves when given high-level objectives from administrators.” [Kephart, Chess 2003]

Synonyms: self-managing computing; self-managing systems

Related terms: self-configuration; self-healing; self-optimization; self-protection; autonomic manager; adaptive systems
