Unweighting

Unweighting                   Optimization Foundations; Computational Infrastructure

noun

Definition: A post-sampling procedure in Monte Carlo event generation that converts weighted samples or events into an approximately unweighted sample, typically through an acceptance–rejection or hit-or-miss step, for downstream analysis or simulation [Bothmann et al. 2024].

Example in context: “In general, event unweighting (the generation of events with unit weight) is a rather inefficient process, especially for high-multiplicity processes, due to the large spread in event weights.” [Bothmann et al. 2024]

Synonyms: event unweighting; hit-or-miss unweighting

Related terms: reweighting; weighted event generation; acceptance–rejection sampling; Monte Carlo event generation
