Autonomy / autonomous Robotics
autonomy — noun; autonomous — adjective
Definition: Autonomy is the property or capability of an intelligent system (machine, robot, or software system) to operate automatically and perform tasks without direct human intervention, and in robotics often includes adaptation to environmental changes while maintaining task performance. Autonomous describes a machine or system that can perform its task(s) without human intervention or control [Anglo-Russian AI & Robotics Dictionary 2022].
Example in context: “Cognitive control adapts the behavior of the platform based on specific task requirements, reacts to unexpected situations and provides the system with certain degree of autonomy. [Hernansanz et al. 2022] Alert fatigue and automation bias represent changes in user behavior driven by the AI system, rather than by the autonomous actions and decisions of the professional using it, and therefore represent phenomena that impact on autonomy.” [Bartenschlager et al. 2024]
Related terms: machine autonomy; self-governing (context-dependent); semi-autonomous; fully autonomous
