Definition: In research design, a cohort is a defined group of individuals who share a characteristic, exposure, or starting condition and are followed over time to assess subsequent outcomes. Cohort studies are longitudinal and may be prospective, retrospective, or ambispective, with the aim of examining associations between exposures or risk factors and later status or disease outcomes [Andrade 2022].
