Hyper-heuristic

Hyper-heuristic                              Optimization Foundations

noun

Definition: A high-level search methodology that selects, generates, or adapts heuristics to solve computational search/optimization problems rather than solving them directly at the low heuristic level [Dokeroglu et al. 2024].

Example in context: “For instance, genetic programming is nowadays often used to design specific algorithm components, e.g., in the hyper-heuristic literature (Pillay & Qu, 2018), as a procedure for automatically designing heuristics, referred to as a generation hyper-heuristic (Burke et al., 2009).” [Adriaensen et al. 2022]

Related terms: heuristic selection method, meta-level heuristic control, metaheuristic (related, not identical)
